Streetohome strives solely to address gaps in housing and support services to meet the housing; health & wellness; employment & volunteering; education, skills & training; legal & advocacy; and community & belonging needs of individuals that are at-risk for, or have lived experience of, homelessness.
About the Position
Streetohome is seeking a great storyteller who can hold an audience in the palm of their hand as they tell a compelling story to spur stakeholders to call ‘all hands-on deck’ and collectively make a real difference in our community. Reporting to the CEO and a key member of our team of three, the Communication & Promotion Specialist is involved in writing and designing captivating materials that support active engagement for the advancement of Streetohome’s priorities and the Strategic Framework 2023-2028. This position will be a one-year term to be reviewed and extended, as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Write, design, and produce communication materials including blogposts, newsletters, fundraising pitches, donor stewardship reports, annual reports, grant applications, and stakeholder presentations using your exceptional storytelling abilities and skills.
- Maintain an editorial calendar to plan, organize and publish high-quality content monthly, in print and digital medium, considering appropriate themed periods throughout the year (e.g., Homelessness Action Week, Mental Health Week, National Addiction Awareness Week) and Streetohome’s publishing schedule for newsletters, annual reports, and donor stewardship.
- Provide good storytelling on social media platforms (Facebook, Threads, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Streetohome Blog) that exudes enthusiasm and energy – empowering others to join us in changing lives and building better futures.
- Regularly upload new content to the website; review pages to ensure they are current and aligned with Streetohome’s approved narrative.
- Monitor, and share with the team, media stories about homelessness related issues including housing, mental health challenges, problematic substance use, unemployment and loneliness.
- Manage media relations activities as directed including news releases, overseeing incoming media requests, and building and maintaining relationships with mass media platforms.
- Develop a communications plan for projects (when required) that identifies goals, stakeholders, key messaging, tactics, timeline, and evaluation.
- Prepare speaking notes/key messaging for the CEO, the Board Chair and other key representatives as required.
- Maintain branding materials including logos, fonts, graphics, templates, photo bank, etc. and ensure that all internal and external materials have a consistent look and tone.
- Participate in assigned committee/working group meetings and provide administrative support in scheduling, creating agendas, taking minutes, etc.
- Lead projects and perform other work as assigned. This position is cross trained with the Administration & Donor Coordinator to provide administrative support, as required.
Experience / Knowledge
- Post graduate degree in journalism, English, communications, public relations, marketing or related field of study. Equivalent training and experience will be considered.
- Minimum proven work experience in storytelling and promoting projects to stakeholders
- Good working knowledge of branding, photography, graphic design, print production, web layout, and desktop publishing.
- Sound knowledge of grant writing techniques/philosophies and experience with grant writing and success in being awarded grants is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of issues of homelessness, mental illness, problematic substance use, poverty, petty crime, and employing marginalized individuals is considered an asset.
Skills / Abilities
- Ability to write and design passionate, accurate, succinct, compelling, and persuasive compositions for communication material
- Skilled in the use of ‘plain language’ to communicate complex data and ideas using clear writing guidelines
- Highly proficient in MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), and MailChimp.
- Skill and experience in Canva are considered an asset
- Strong editing and proof-reading skills with excellent knowledge of grammar rules
- Highly proficient in web content management tools, and specifically WordPress
- Ability to operate and deliver results under pressure, manage diverse and competing priorities, and meet deadlines

- Able to work with individuals and organizations from a wide variety of cultures, abilities and perspectives, particularly with those from marginalized groups
