The Media Resources Senior Technician is responsible for coordinating and providing technical oversight to the efficient day-to-day operation of the University’s Media Resources Centre. The Media Resources Senior Technician assists with supervision of the Media Resources Technicians, provides Tier 2-3 support for the University’s Reservation and Distribution Database System, and oversees records and invoices, and supplies and equipment. The Senior Technician works closely with the Media Resources Coordinator to ensure the client experience is consistent, processes and workflows are aligned, and standards are established and followed.
Some Typical Duties:
- Supports students, staff, and faculty by checking media equipment in and out using the Equipment Scheduling system. Provides instructions on operation and proper use of media equipment. Responds with solutions, assistance, and technical advice regarding policies and procedures.
- Oversees equipment inventory. Ensures equipment is maintained in a secure, safe, clean, and functional manner. Communicates with technicians in other areas, ensuring equipment distributed from Media Resources is maintained and operational. Trains and directs junior staff on new equipment operations, safety procedures or policy changes. May provide similar training to area technicians.
- Oversees and maintains records for student and faculty late returns and missing equipment pieces. Generates charges, late equipment letters and equipment replacement invoices. Responds to inquiries on charges and meets with students and faculty to review their invoices. Exercises judgment and makes independent decisions within the late fine policy. Tact and discretion required to deal with or settle requests, complaints, or clarification of information. Consults with the Coordinator on matters of user abuse of equipment or equipment replacements. May consult with Finance and Student Services on student enrolment and payment status.
- Provides Tier 2-3 support for ECU’s Reservation and Distribution Database System. Troubleshoots day-to-day operation of the system by liaising with vendor technical support, ECU technicians and ITS staff to ensure consistent service. Ensures data regarding student and faculty records and student access is up to date. Under the direction of the Media Resources Coordinator, provides reports and statistics on the use of resources.
- Assists the Coordinator with the supervision of the Media Resources Technicians. May provide day-to day direction to junior staff, assigns and reviews work, provides direction in a variety of technical, administrative, personnel, and student related areas and acts a resource, troubleshooting requests from students, staff, and faculty. May escalate complex or unusual requests to Coordinator.
- Participates in the selection process for new staff. In consultation with the Coordinator, assists with the training of new staff on Reservation and Distribution Database System and department operations and procedures. Provides junior staff with one-on-one and group specialized training on equipment and system operations.
- In conjunction with the Coordinator, researches, orders, and maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment. May research and recommend capital equipment purchases.
- Meets with the Coordinator, and Manager to ensure coordination and communication of work activities and projects within the Centre.
- Works collaboratively with the Coordinator to review and develop Centre’s resources, access policies and procedures, and interdepartmental communication systems. Provides direction to junior staff in preparing policy and procedure documents such as forms, signs, and website content.
- Represents the work area at department and other meetings as required. Provides department information tours.
- May participate in working groups composed of departmental staff and technical staff from other departments to resolve issues, evaluate emerging technologies, and establish standards.
- Participates in the planning and production of ECU’s University’s Graduation Exhibition.
- Ensures a safe working and learning environment by adhering to WHMIS, WorkSafeBC Regulations, and by following the University’s Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Maintains currency in areas of expertise.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field such as Audio, Film or Video, Photography).
- Minimum of four years’ experience in a comparable technical position in a post-secondary institution.
- Equipment management
- Wide variety of media equipment including film, video, photography, lighting, and sound
- Equipment scheduling software systems such as WebCheckout, EventPro and Connect2.
- Client service ticketing system such as TDX and Spiceworks.
- Enterprise applications used in academic and administrative processes (Moodle, Colleague, Banner)
- Budgets and purchasing procedures.
- Experience with portable equipment used in art and design productions preferred.
- Supervisory experience as asset.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to make independent decisions within policies and guidelines.
- Ability to clearly communicate and demonstrate the use of media equipment to students, staff, and faculty with widely varying technical backgrounds.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve a wide range of media equipment problems.
- Excellent knowledge of computers, Mac and Windows OS, and Microsoft and Teams applications
- Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
- Supervisory skills with the ability to lead, encourage, and support.
- Physical stamina and mobility to permit lifting, carrying, and moving heavy objects.
- Ability to exercise initiative, creativity, and leadership to ensure the successful operations of the area.
