Core Responsibilities

Roofers perform a wide range of technical and manual tasks to protect building interiors from environmental damage.

• Inspections and Assessments: Conduct detailed roof inspections to identify leaks, structural weaknesses, or damage from weather events like storms.
• Estimating and Planning: Measure roof dimensions to calculate the exact amount of materials and labor needed for a project, providing clients with cost estimates.
• Surface Preparation: Remove old roofing systems (tear-offs), clear debris from roofs and gutters, and replace damaged or rotting structural components like joists or plywood.
• Installation of Materials:
  • Residential: Install asphalt shingles, solar tiles, wood shakes, or metal panels on steep-slope roofs.
  • Commercial: Apply specialized membranes such as EPDM, TPO, or modified bitumen on flat or low-slope roofs using welding or hot tar methods.
• Weatherproofing and Sealing: Install vapor barriers, insulation, and roof ventilation systems to regulate temperature and moisture. Precise cutting and sealing (flashing) around chimneys, vents, and edges are critical to prevent leaks.
• Safety Compliance: Set up essential safety equipment, including scaffolding, ladders, and fall-arrest systems (harnesses) in accordance with OSHA or local safety standards.
