Apple Adds Distraction Control to Safari

Recently, some new features have been added to Safari by Apple to improve browsing by lowering distractions and improving accessibility to content. The improvements represent a major advancement in user-centric design for Apple's browser and are presently available for developer betas of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

1. Distraction Control. Customize Your Browsing Environment

Distraction Control enables users to exclude distracting items from websites. This is one of the most notable features. The function is comparable to the Boost tool in Arc Browser, which allows users to alter the look of web pages by deleting certain elements.

Using the Page Menu in the Smart Search box, you may choose which web page elements to conceal using Distraction Control. When deleted, these components remain hidden until you revisit the website. Currently hidden components do not sync between various devices.

However, the tool has its limitations. It won't remove ads or sections with frequently changing content. It remains to be seen if it can handle dynamic elements like "Who to follow" or "Explore" on social media platforms. For consumers wishing to simplify their online browsing, this tool is a potential addition despite these drawbacks.

2. Distraction-Free Video Watching

Viewer mode, new to Safari on macOS 15 Sequoia, promises to give users a distraction-free video-watching experience. Safari will automatically cover up other page components so that the video takes up as much room as possible while it plays. The video enters picture-in-picture mode when you click away, guaranteeing uninterrupted viewing. Similar to Reader mode, which clears out unnecessary content to make reading easier, Viewer mode may experience problems interacting with unique video players on websites. Nonetheless, it offers a cleaner, more focused way to watch videos online.

3. Article Summaries and Enhanced Information Highlighting

Are you in a hurry? Safari now offers a new feature called a summary of articles. This function is very helpful for rapidly understanding lengthy articles' key concepts. Summaries provide a brief summary, saving time for busy users, but they should not be used in place of reading the whole article.

Furthermore, Safari highlights relevant content on web pages by using machine learning. For instance, while reading about a hotel, Safari may show you a map location card with Apple Maps routing options.

Similarly, movie-related articles may result in a movie information card. It is now simpler to find relevant details without conducting further searches because of this smart highlighting.

4. Highlights and Improved Reader Mode

Apple also introduced “Highlights”. This feature surfaces important information from a web page, such as quick links for driving directions, call information, and summaries of TV show reviews. These improved listening are provided via a redesigned Reader mode.

Safari delivers a more focused and tailored browsing experience by minimizing distractions and using AI to present useful data. These new features will help you get the most out of your online experience, whether you're browsing the web, watching movies, or reading articles. Enjoy.
