Description

The Company

UBC Properties Trust (UBCPT) was established in 1988. We build financial legacy and create innovative spaces to live and learn. We develop, service and lease residential land at UBC to create communities and build UBC’s endowment for future generations. We construct and manage rental properties to provide residential, retail and office space to support workforce housing and other academic objectives. We provide project management services to construct institutional buildings for UBC, and advise on land use and development. We operate on both the Point Grey campus and UBC Okanagan; and have two property management divisions, Village Gate Homes (UBC staff and faculty rentals) and Wesbrook Properties.

The Team

Our Accounting team plays a pivotal role in supporting our Development and Property Management teams. We have a Controller and Assistant Controller that manages the small team of accountants. We are looking for someone that is a team player, with a bright attitude to fit in with this group of hard-working individuals. The ideal candidate is professional, dependable, flexible and adaptable to working with a variety of personalities in the workplace. You take a proactive approach to improve existing functions and processes for greater efficiencies. You are a quick learner who can handle variety and you take pride in your work.

The Opportunity

The Accountant will report directly to the Controller and will be primarily responsible for monitoring daily bank account balances, conducting bank transactions, recording bank transactions accurately, calculating and recording monthly management fees, preparing monthly capital billings, and handling monthly GST filings. Additionally, the role involves bank reconciliations, reconciling holdback payables, reviewing cheque runs, assisting with year-end audit preparations, and performing other assigned tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Daily monitoring and management of multiple bank accounts.
  • Recording various bank transactions, including loan and investment transactions, accurately.
  • Performing monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Reconciling holdback payables and other balance sheet accounts.
  • Reviewing weekly and monthly cheque runs.
  • Calculating and recording monthly management fees.
  • Preparing monthly capital billings and recording the payments accordingly.
  • Managing monthly GST filings.
  • Assisting with year-end audit preparations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications:

 

  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, with a preference for candidates actively pursuing a CPA designation.
  • 2-3 years of accounting experience.
  • Preferably experience in real estate development or construction industry.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Methodical work habits with flexibility to handle challenges.
  • Solid understanding of MS Office and intermediate Excel skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.
  • Strong desire for learning, customer service orientation, and excellent time management.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proactive in identifying process improvements.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
