Position Title

Continuing Studies Instructors – Youth Art + Culture Lab

 

Job Summary

The Continuing Studies Department at Emily Carr University of Art + Design is seeking experienced interdisciplinary artists and educators to join our team of instructors.

We are specifically hiring for the Youth Art + Culture Lab program, a partnership between Emily Carr University of Art + Design and the Richmond Art Gallery. The program provides youth ages 12-15 with an opportunity to build confidence and develop diverse creative skills through hands-on and interactive sessions with local and international artists, gallery educators and ECU instructors. Students can expect to have behind-the-scenes access to artists and exhibitions at the Richmond Art Gallery, participate in art-making workshops, explore a wide range of media, and deepen their understanding of art.

The successful candidate must be available for the dates and times below. In addition, they are also expected to be available for meetings with ECU and RAG staff throughout the program, and to collaborate on developing lesson plans that compliment the exhibitions.

This position is offered as a term-based contract for the duration of each scheduled course at an hourly pay rate of $77.52/hr. We encourage individuals with creative practices prioritizing one or more of the following disciplines or techniques to apply:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Illustration (Traditional and Digital)
  • Animation and Motion Graphics (2D, 3D and Stop Motion)
  • Photography

 

Successful applicants will be added to our pool of Continuing Studies instructors who are contracted on a course-by-course basis.

 

Required Qualifications

We are seeking candidates offering the following skills and experience:

  • Expert knowledge working in a variety of media, including but not limited to: drawing, painting, illustration, animation, and photography
  • Strong classroom management skills, including implementation of equitable practice, positive disciplinary skills, empathetic communication, and student-centered learning
  • Strong teamwork, organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Experience working collaboratively with artists, curators, gallery and museum educators on the development of lesson plans and content in alignment with gallery exhibitions and sessions
  • Experience working in community partnerships with arts organizations and institutions

 

 

For our Youth + Teen Programs, we are also seeking those with:

  • Experience working with youth + teens from diverse creative, cultural and educational backgrounds
  • Experience using adaptive, accessible and inclusive instructional methods for student engagement
  • Considerable knowledge of critique and feedback strategies
  • Experience developing lesson plans and preparing content for online and/or on-campus learning
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud preferred
  • Secondary and/or post-secondary teaching experience preferred
  • Experience with online education (including Moodle and Zoom) an asset

 

For our Adult Programs, we are seeking candidates with:

  • Experience working with adult learners from diverse creative, cultural, and educational backgrounds.
  • Significant knowledge of industry standards and practices, including client relations, contracts and collaborative projects.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Post-secondary teaching experience preferred
  • Experience with online education (including Moodle and Zoom) an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and G-Suite an asset

 

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates with:

  • Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residence status (at this time, we are unable to hire international applicants for instructional contract roles)
  • Significant experience working in industry, galleries or museums, who are also interested in sharing their knowledge and expertise with others
  • Experience working with learners from diverse creative, cultural, and educational backgrounds at the secondary and post-secondary level; prior experience with mentorship or training is also considered an asset
  • Experience developing lesson plans; prior experience developing internal training modules or leading workshops also considered an asset

 

 

For those with little or no prior teaching experience, Continuing Studies offers support in the form of group workshops, standardized worksheets and individual meetings to assist in the process of course development and instruction.
