Serving as Secretary to the statutory Complaints Inquiry Committee (CIC), the Director facilitates its work, manages all aspects of the conduct and discipline process, and represents the CIC in regulatory proceedings. As a key leader in the Extended Management team, the Director provides strategic oversight to ensure fairness, consistency, and operational excellence in regulatory matters, requiring strong judgement, discretion, and an ability to navigate complex issues. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Regulatory, the role offers a flexible hybrid work arrangement in either Edmonton or Calgary, with regular travel between both cities and occasional travel across Canada.

  • Set conduct and discipline goals aligned with CPA Alberta's regulatory mandates, and develop and refine related policies.
  • Monitor and assess conduct-related issues to identify patterns and emerging trends, and use these insights to support the development of preventative strategies and guide policy improvements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of developments in administrative law and regulatory best practices.
  • Represent CPA Alberta on national committees and participate in cross-jurisdictional initiatives to share knowledge and influence harmonized practices.
  • Provide leadership to the Conduct & Discipline department, ensuring alignment with organizational values and regulatory objectives.
  • Ensure responsible use of departmental resources and adherence to budgetary guidelines.

Candidate Experience
While no individual will embody every quality, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional qualifications and personal competencies.

Professional Qualifications:

  • A CPA designation is required with a minimum of 5 years post-designation experience.
  • Experience in professional administrative law.
  • Experience working within a conduct or discipline capacity in a professional regulatory context.
  • Demonstrated leadership in policy development and procedural design.
  • Minimum of 4 years of people management or supervisory experience.
  • Strong awareness and experience in risk management.
  • Relevant continuing education in regulatory governance, administrative justice, or professional regulation.
  • Familiarity with board governance practices and volunteer management in a regulatory context is an asset.
  • Superior report writing skills with a strong knowledge of how to write for a professional regulatory adjudicative audience.
  • Proficiency in the MS Suite and virtual meeting platforms (ie. Zoom).

Personal Attributes:

  • Sound judgement and integrity, with a demonstrated commitment to fairness, impartiality, and due process.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized with strengths in multi-tasking.
  • Resilience and composure, particularly when navigating sensitive, high-stakes, or contentious issues.
  • Strategic astuteness in problem-solving.
  • Collaborative approach to working with colleagues.
