Description

Canada’s National Ballet School is currently inviting applications for the full-time, permanent position of Cook.

We invite you to join the vibrant staff community of Canada's National Ballet School (NBS). NBS has 300+ employees
supporting programs ranging from professional ballet training, recreational and community dance programs, and
groundbreaking health initiatives.

We are looking for a dynamic individual with the talent, innovative-thinking and passion to help NBS continue to share the
transformative power of dance with people of all ages, abilities, and aspirations. As an organization, NBS is continually
evolving and we are looking for a professional with unique, new ideas to complement the School’s collaborative work
culture.

Reporting to the Chef De Cuisine, the Cook will support the Food Services Department by providing assistance in the
preparation of food in the kitchen, as well as by serving food to students and patrons of Mona Campbell Square Café. The
schedule of this role will be Monday to Friday 6:30 am – 2:30 pm or 7:00 am – 3:00 pm



Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Co-ordinate and participate in all Kitchen production activities as they relate to the service of meals, snacks and drinks to

students by assembling food items, responding to special/restricted dietary requirements and ensuring meals are kept
for Residence students who may be late due to other commitments

  • Provide assistance to the Chef de Cuisine/ Sous Chef with hot food preparation by performing basic tasks including;

blanching, roasting, baking and sautéing vegetables, meats and desserts. Finish cold food products such as salads,
dressings and buffet platters

  • Serve patrons of Mona Campbell Square Café by communicating daily fare and dishing out portions as per established

guidelines

  • Replenish supplies by monitoring and keeping track of usage and keeping Chef de Cuisine /Sous Chef informed of any

issues such as out of stock items, possible shortages and waste

  • Unload and restock food items when food deliveries are received
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment by, keeping serving area and kitchen clean and tidy by putting excess food

away and clearing away waste, doing the dishes and by following instructions regarding cleanliness and sanitation at all
time

  • Perform other duties as required to contribute to the team effort and achieve the objectives of the Food Services

Department


Qualifications/Skills/Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in service/general help in a professional kitchen
  • High School diploma or equivalent; Food Safety Handling Certificate is required; Knowledge of food safety

standards

  • Excellent customer service skills (“service with a smile”); ability to anticipate customer needs and recommend

dishes; ability to execute instructions accurately; good communication skills

  • Knowledge of food service procedures and various food-and-drink combinations
  • Proficiency in washing, peeling, cutting and seeding fruits and vegetables.
  • Institutional kitchen practice; health & safety procedures; Good understanding of sanitation and cleanliness issues

with respect to the service area and cafeteria, including knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information
System (WHMIS).

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment;

 

Successful candidates must supply Canada’s National Ballet School with a Police Reference Check in accordance with the
School’s Child Abuse/Sexual Abuse Prevention Policy; this will be coordinated through the Human Resources Department of
NBS.
