JOIN OUR TEAM!

We are looking for a motivated Disability Benefits Advocate to join our Legal Advocacy Program team! The Advocate will be responsible for individual and community advocacy relating to B.C. provincial disability benefits (known as PWD) and newcomer issues.

 


POSITION FUNCTION:

Under the supervision of the Manager of the Legal Advocacy Program, the Disability Benefits Advocate provides information, referral, application support, legal support, public education, and related services in provincial disability assistance. We are looking for a team member who has a strong desire to uphold the rights and dignities of people with disabilities.

 


Disability Alliance B.C. is partnering with MOSAIC through a project to increase access for newcomers with disabilities in applying for provincial disability assistance. MOSAIC is hiring a community advocate that will provide greater support for newcomer clients in a way that addresses and respects their language and cultural needs.

 


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant university degree coupled with Certificate of a Paralegal Program, Conflict Resolution, and Community Development with comparable experience or a combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in the Canadian legal system.
  • Excellent knowledge of legal community and social-legal services available to immigrants, refugees, and newcomers in Metro Vancouver.
  • Knowledge of immigration law, especially as pertains to status necessary to obtain social assistance and PWD.
  • Superior file management and experience with client and professional ethics.
  • Strong conflict resolution, problem-solving, verbal, and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of standard office equipment and software applications (word processing, spreadsheets, and video conferencing).
  • Ability to work independently as well as to seek assistance/advice/direction as appropriate. A knowledge of immigration law is also an asset.
  • Knowledge of a second language is an asset.
  • Minimum of two years recent related experience.
  • People with a lived experience as a newcomer and with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply

 

 

HOURS: 24 hours per week

 


The successful candidate may be permitted to work a hybrid work model (combination of in-office and remote work). Candidate must be able to commute to 2730 Commercial Drive, Vancouver.

 


BENEFITS:

A competitive benefits package is provided with contracts of at least 1 year in length and which offer a minimum of 17.5 hours of work per week.
