Description

Job Summary
The Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute (Blusson QMI) at the University of British Columbia is a world-leading venture into research of systems and phenomena explicitly involving quantum mechanics that consists of physicists, chemists and engineers, with strong and active partnerships with world leading institutions.

The Quantum Measurement Research Technician is a highly motivated and skilled individual who develops infrastructure for measurement of quantum devices, primarily multi-quantum-dot based quantum circuits based on Ge heterostructures, for the group of Principal Investigator Joe Salfi and his collaborators. The incumbent will contribute to writing and publishing research project results, attend conferences and workshops to gather and disseminate research results in high-impact publications, and participate in multi-year roadmapping activities at a yearly program review. With others in Salfi’s team, the incumbent will contribute to coordination of research, preparation of reports, and technical content relevant to a yearly program review. The candidate will work on-site at UBC.

Organizational Status
The Quantum Measurement Research Technician reports to Project Principal Investigator Joe Salfi and formally to the Blusson QMI Facilities Director. The incumbent coordinates the planning and implementation of research projects.

Work Performed

  • In collaboration with other team members, supports the development of experimental measurement setups using a combination of already acquired ambient temperature and low-temperature electronics for quantum device measurement, especially solid-state qubits, to be deployed in three to four different cryogenic systems.
  • Contributes, together with other team members, to the development of new software (or adapting existing software) for experimental control and data acquisition.
  • Contributes to a Canada-wide project on Spin Qubits in the form of technical presentations in yearly program reviews, writing or editing content for progress reports, and liaising with industry partners on measurement infrastructure.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Proactive solution seeking will be strongly encouraged but, as this is a support position, decisions must be made collaboratively with the relevant research group. Failure to work cooperatively and collaboratively with Blusson QMI staff could lead to lower research productivity. The Quantum Measurement Research Technician must take responsibility for any errors in work, report problems/mistakes in a timely fashion, and work hard to correct them.

Supervision Received
Works independently, in consultation with the Principal Investigator and other faculty members. Is called upon to use unique and highly advanced technical knowledge to resolve complex scientific and technical problems that have not been previously encountered and do not have established methods, principles or guidelines to follow for resolution - develops these as necessary and documents the process.

Supervision Given
Provides advice to the Principal Investigator, postdocs, and graduate students on the development of new nanofabrication processes.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a technical college or institute or completion of a recognized apprenticeship and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrable hands- on experience working with cryogenic apparatus.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrable hands- on experience with experimental evaluation of electronic devices at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Experience and/or desire to gain experience in contributing to the management of projects with deadlines and deliverables.
  • Demonstrated team-work and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrable hands- on experience with microwave and optical measurements at cryogenic temperatures.
