About the Role
As the US Tax Manager, you will play a key role in US income tax compliance (e.g., federal, state/local) and financial reporting (i.e., tax provisions) for Jim Pattison Group. The US Tax Manager is responsible for obtaining the financial information from Divisions, preparing/reviewing tax returns/supporting tax working papers, maintaining tax data in Excel and software systems, and other tasks as necessary. The US Tax Manager will also be involved in supporting reorganizations, acquisitions, and research for various tax matters.
This position is ideal for a forward-thinking tax professional who thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment and demonstrates a strong work ethic and skill with working collaboratively with internal teams.
Responsibilities include:
- Manage the entire US income tax compliance process including reviewing the current processes, identifying opportunities for improvement and automation/technology solutions and implementing those changes
- Prepare/review US tax returns and supporting workpapers, including corporate returns, partnership returns and other related forms
- Maintain fixed asset ledgers for tax purposes
- Compute and remit quarterly income tax estimates
- Prepare year-end tax provision working papers including footnotes
- Work with accounting teams to record appropriate journal entries
- Identify tax issues and provide practical tax advice and solutions to operations
- Collaborate with and provide other tax (direct and indirect) support to operations
- Respond to inquiries, letters and audit requests from IRS and state/local tax authorities
- Assist with M&A and reorganizations as required
- Assist with various research and other projects as required
What you bring:
- Risk based mindset balancing business operational needs with potential tax exposures
- Process driven with an aptitude to optimize workflows (this one is not as important but would allude to the efficient processes we are hoping to implement).
- Professional accounting designation Canadian CPA and/or US CPA
- 5+ years of corporate accounting and US tax compliance experience, ideally a mix of public practice and in-house role(s).
- Experience with Onesource Income Tax (or equivalent e.g., GoRS) is a must
- Experience with preparation (or review) of income tax provision is preferred
- High proficiency with Excel and in utilizing technology and accounting systems
- Strong technical skills and effective communication skills – You have strong US tax technical skills, identifying material issues and have a process for solving tax problems. You are effective at communicating with all stakeholders including those without a tax background.
- Strong work ethic & accountability – You take ownership of projects, meet strict deadlines, and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.
- Team player & relationship builder – You work collaboratively with team members (e.g., providing coaching) and internal stakeholders to facilitate the tax cycle, ensuring smooth coordination of filings, reconciliations, and reporting.
